Credit card debts at Christmas

26 June 2008

Did you know that the average parent spends roughly $400 dollars on Christmas presents each year? Credit card debts increase around the holiday season - and it's no wonder with all the money we're expected to fork out. There are presents for family and friends, lots of parties where you're expected to bring nibblies to, parties you host yourself, and to top it all off there are the New Year's Eve parties barely a week later.

Credit card debts can be too easy to get into at Christmas. But you can take steps to prevent debt.

Plan in advance. Find a good hiding spot and start buying presents during mid year sales. Toys are often cheaper at this time.

Use up those reward points on your credit card to purchase wine. There's no need to end up with credit card debts for taking bottles of wine to every BBQ you attend.

Set a limit for present spending. While many kids are after the latest technological gadgets, there are often cheaper models around that do exactly the same thing. If the item is pricey, limit the number of other presents the child receives.
